Day 11 – My Top 8 Tips for Getting Started With Exercise
I get so many questions about what my workouts were like when I first started my weightless journey! Being over 500 pounds it was a physical struggle to really do anything. So I just walked. I started with 5 minutes everyday which turned into 10 minutes and then 20 minutes. Before I knew it, I was doing workout videos at home. To be honest, I hated it! Moving my body hurt and it was very hard to do. I never let that stop me or make me give up. I pushed myself and made working out a priority. We all have excuses as to why we feel we can’t workout. Reality is that the only thing stopping us is…us. You CAN do it! You just need to believe in yourself and give it your best shot. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Nothing will change unless you are willing to throw out the excuses and try. Create new habits by making exercise a part of your everyday routine. It will get easier I promise, and the pain you may feel now will soon be filled with so much pride in how far you have come. I hope these tips will help you to get started and start the New Year off on the right path. Starting is always the hardest part, but after you get going it will be hard to stop you. Just know that you CAN do it.
Tip 1. Find a support system. This can be anyone…your family, friends, colleagues, coaches, trainers or anyone who will help support you and believe in you when you are having days where you don’t believe in yourself.
Tip 2. Start Exercising because you love yourself and want to take care of your body, not because you hate your body or the way you look.
Tip 3. Just start. It doesn’t matter if you start by doing 5 minutes of walking or if you can last an hour or more at the gym. What matters is that you just start, get your heart rate up and challenge yourself. What matters is that you are giving it your best and just moving.
Tip 4. Find something that you enjoy/will be able to stick to. This may be walking, running, swimming, aerobics, yoga…the options are endless. The biggest thing is that you just keep moving.
Tip 5. It is ok if it is hard. Working out can be hard and it is okay to not enjoy it. What is not okay is to quit because you think that it is too hard or think that you cannot do it. I know you can!
Tip 6. Stop making excuses. You are working out for yourself because you are the most important thing in your life. You can take at least 60 minutes out of the 1440 minutes in a day for “you” time and help take care of yourself.
Tip 7. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing or all of the things that you “can’t” or may not be able to physically do. Put all of your energy towards what you CAN do and focus on that.
Tip 8. Believe in yourself. You CAN do it!
